Regardless, Johnson defended his Fast and Furious spinoff movie, saying that all he's wanted to do was to " build out" the series, something that didn't bother franchise leader Vin Diesel, who attempted to ease the tension between his fellow co-stars. That decision irked Gibson, who took to social media to issue a tirade of his co-star. Then, the day after the studio delayed Fast and Furious 9, they confirmed Johnson and Statham's currently untitled Hobbs/Shaw spinoff, set to release in July 2019. Universal Pictures's decision to push back Fast and Furious 9 to April 2020 (from its original April 2019 release date) came mere days after Gibson had publicly pleaded with Johnson not to prioritize his spinoff film with Jason Statham - which would focus on the adventures of Johnson's DSS Agent Luke Hobbs and Stathams' former SAS Officer Deckard Shaw - over that of the mainline saga. The public drama brewing between Fast and Furious costars continues to rage on with Tyrese Gibson delivering yet another harshly worded statement regarding Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's upcoming spinoff movie.
